Economic Empowerment for People with Disabilities

  • Burlington, Vermont (map)

Country/Region: Indonesia

This IVLP program seeks to replicate what the U.S. has done to promote and protect the right to work for People With Disabilities (PWD), with an emphasis on how the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) created a mechanism to make American society inclusive for everyone. In particular, the program will equip stakeholders with knowledge of best practices for giving people with physical disabilities physical access to public and private spaces, and updating telecommunications technologies to facilitate communication by those who are blind, deaf, or have a speech impairment. The program will offer examples of accessible workplaces and inclusive hiring practices, and introduce trainings that can be replicated in Indonesia to provide micro-enterprise and vocational skills that improve access to credit and business development services for PWD. This project will explore the changes that have occurred under the ADA and its applicability as a potential model to be adopted to promote more inclusive societies.
