Introducing the VCWA’s ‘Exchange Report’ Blog Series
What are Exchange Programs?
The Vermont Council on World Affairs promotes an awareness and understanding of the world and its people, places, and cultures through public forums and hosting international visitors from around the world. Our exchange programs include the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP), Pan-Africa Youth Leadership Program (PAYLP), Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI), the U.S. Congress’ Open World program, and a variety of other projects. In support of the VCWA’s mission, these exchanges are designed to expand mutual understanding between Americans and individuals from other nations.
Each year, the VCWA connects hundreds of visitors with NGOs, local businesses, government officials, and community members throughout Vermont. Meetings, site visits, workshops, and roundtable discussions provide opportunities to expand professional networks and share information and best practices by connecting international visitors with their professional counterparts in Vermont. Program themes include renewable energy, government accountability, social entrepreneurship, youth leadership, and more. Visitors also participate in a variety of cultural activities and meet with local host families to ensure they leave the program with a greater appreciation for American culture and Vermont values.
