On-The-Ground Expert in Kyiv Provides Insights Into Ukraine Crisis
On May 12th, the Vermont Council on World Affairs (VCWA) provided audience members with an on-the-ground look at the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. In honor of the organization's 70th anniversary, the VCWA launched its 'Timely Topics' Series to provide Vermont with geopolitical and international relations insights.
The VCWA was pleased to host a conversation between VCWA Board Chair and former Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle and finance and government expert Glen Wright, who is currently living in Kyiv amid the war in Ukraine, which has displaced roughly 5 million outside of the country, and an innumerable population within Ukraine's borders. Wright has post-soviet regional expertise, as well as expertise in governance, decentralization, and topics related to fiscal and budgetary issues, and has worked in over 25 countries with organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, US Agency for International Development, and the Department for International Development. He analyzed the current crisis and its impacts from the lens of an international governance expert and an on-the-ground analyst and accepted questions from audience members. Topics of discussion ranged from President Biden's response to the Ukraine crisis, the speed of response, the US strategy, Zelensky's presidency, the current state of Kyiv, the day-to-day life in the capital city, and many more.
