On March 7, 2021 three Vermont teams participated in this year’s virtual Academic WorldQuest (AWQ) competition!

Academic World Quest (AWQ) is a flagship youth education program of the World Affairs Councils of America. It is a team game testing high school students’ knowledge of international affairs. In the game, four-person teams compete by answering multiple-choice and fill-in the blank questions divided into ten unique and engaging thematic categories. Because of the virtual setting, all three teams from Vermont will move on to compete nationally in the World Affairs Councils of America's Academic WorldQuest National Competition in April.

The three VT teams that competed included:

  1. Vermont Commons High School

  2. Colchester High School

  3. Champlain Valley and Burlington High School conjoined team

The virtual competition was held using the Wonder.Me platform (similar to ZOOM). This platform was fantastic in allowing each high school team to form their own “pod” and view the speakers and questions at the same time.

The students stayed strong and dedicated in spite of the technical difficulties and wifi crashes that created numerous obstacles throughout the competition. Five hours later, 100 questions down, and many high schoolers brains on the verge of melting, our regional AWQ competition came to a close.

All three VT teams placed in the top 20 out of 27 teams from Maine, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Illinois, and Boston! VT Commons came in 11th, CVU/BHS in 16th, and Colchester in 18th! Many students expressed how accomplished they felt after the final round of questions and their excitement to do event better next year!

Now just weeks away, stay tuned to hear how these students do at the AWQ National Competition on April 17, 2021!
