In this session, Vera Zakem, a global security expert with a speciality focus on Russia, and Anne Galloway, Executive Director of VtDigger, will consider the implications of disinformation in the upcoming presidential election and the role of foreign interference in US politics in the past and more recently.

Vera Zakem

Vera Zakem is a Senior Technology and Policy Advisor with Technology for Global Security. She is a recognized leader, driving strategy at the intersection of global threats, policy, emerging technologies and innovation, and organizational strategy and operations.

Vera is a recognized expert on Russian influence and disinformation, the impact that technology plays in society and democracy, terrorism, and human security and stability. Prior to joining as Tech4GS as a Senior Advisor, Vera led strategy and research at Twitter's operations, leading initiatives to continuously serve Twitter's customers globally. Prior, she served as a leader in strategy, partnerships, research, and policy engagement at various think tanks and industry organizations in Washington, DC, including the CNA Corporation, where she spearheaded initiatives on global influence and Russia's indirect approaches, while leading the overall strategy and business strategy for her business unit.

Anne Galloway

Anne Galloway is the founder and editor of VTDigger and the executive director of the Vermont Journalism Trust. Galloway founded VTDigger in 2009 after she was laid off from her position as Sunday editor of the Rutland Herald and Times Argus. VTDigger has grown from a $16,000 a year nonprofit with no employees to a $2 million nonprofit daily news operation with a staff of 25. In 2017, Galloway was a finalist for the Ancil Payne Award for Ethics, the Al Neuharth Innovation in Investigative Journalism Award and the Investigative Reporters and Editors FOIA Award for her investigation into allegations of foreign investor fraud at Jay Peak Resort.

Entrepreneur, Author, and Educator

Bill Schubart has lived with his family in Vermont since 1947. Educated locally and at at Exeter, Kenyon, and the University of Vermont, he is fluent in French language and culture, which he taught before entering communications as an entrepreneur. He co-founded Philo Records and is the author of the highly successful Lamoille Stories (2008), a collection of Vermont tales. His bibliography includes three short story collections and five novels. His latest novel  Lila & Theron is distributed by Simon and Schuster recently won a Benjamin Franklin Silver Award at the Independent Book Publishers for popular fiction. He has served on many boards and currently chairs the Vermont College of Fine Arts, known for its writing programs. He speaks extensively on the arts, media and non-profit governance and writes about Vermont in fiction, humor, and opinion pieces. He is also a regular commentator and blogger on public radio. The great nephew of the renowned photographer Alfred Stieglitz, he lives in Vermont with his wife Kate, also a writer.
