The New York Times reported in December 2005 that the National Security Agency has been conducting covert surveillance of Americans since 2002, without legally mandated judicial permission or oversight, even though the U.S. Attorney General refused President Bush’s approval request for warrantless wiretapping and related activities. The President insists that such surveillance is justifiable and legal in our on-going “war on terrorism.” Critics, however, contend that it is illegal and undermines American civil liberties. Come hear a distinguished panel discuss this issue and take this opportunity to express your own opinions. Watch the May 25, 2006 event here You'll need Real Player to view this. Israel-Arab Peace Project With the goal of promoting genuine and lasting relationships between disparate and often antagonistic groups, the "Beyond Boundaries: Vermont-Israel-Arab Peace Partners Project” is designed to draw together a broad cross-section of academicians, students, business people, government leaders, community-based organizations and the general public in Vermont to meet with -- and learn from -- participants from Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank around the theme of global water resource issues. The vital need to share, manage, and improve water resources, the scarcity of which is an underlying source of conflict in the Middle East, will serve as the focus of the project, while on a broader cultural level, the project will promote diversity and foster mutual respect, tolerance of cultural differences, and an understanding of the current tensions between Israel and Arab populations. Global Water Resources Symposium Part of the Israel-Arab Peace Project - the VCWA sponsored Global Water Resources Symposium at Saint Michael’s College on October 5-6, 2005, served as a forum for discussing innovative technologies and practical steps that can be taken to solve water resource issues - a critical issue in the Middle East and around the world.
